Indian Government Warns Android Users: Critical Security Threat in 2025

The Indian government has sounded the alarm for millions of Android users across the country, highlighting a critical security threat affecting devices running various Android versions. This warning follows Google’s recent security bulletin, which flagged severe vulnerabilities impacting billions of Android users worldwide. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has rated these issues as high-severity, urging immediate action to safeguard devices from potential cyberattacks.

What’s the Android Security Threat?

According to CERT-In, the vulnerabilities stem from flaws in multiple core components of the Android ecosystem, including the Framework, Android Runtime, System, Widevine DRM, Project Mainline, Kernel, Arm components, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek components, Qualcomm components, and Qualcomm closed-source elements. These weaknesses could allow hackers to steal sensitive data, disrupt device functionality, or even trigger denial-of-service attacks.

Google’s bulletin suggests that some of these vulnerabilities may already be under active exploitation, posing a significant risk to the Android ecosystem, including phones and other devices manufactured by major brands. As these issues affect the kernel level of Android, both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end-users are at serious risk.
